[JUD.LawOfficeStudyProgram] Seeking LOS Sponsor

I have a slightly different perspective, garnered from 25 years of owning and practicing in law firms in Vermont. Unless your sponsor is a relative, they will be more persuaded by what you can bring to their firm, than what you stand to gain from them. As a inexperienced student starting out, to be frank - you are dead weight in a law firm, particularly if you are looking to be paid from the start.
What makes you attractive to a sponsor is what non-legal skills or experience they need and that you can bring. So, a nurse brings immediate value to a personal injury or medical malpractice firm. If you have skills in computer automation (systems, document generation, animation, etc.), that is something a firm typically has to pay outsiders for and where you can add value in-house. A realtor brings their rolodex of relationships to a real estate firm. And so on. Every firm is different and every budding clerk has something else to bring. I would suggest that you look at what skills you have or could learn that provide value to a law firm to offset your dead weight for the first year or two.

At interview you might choose to ask about the firms willingness to support and/or sponsor you. Raising the question could make you a more desirable job candidate. Plus you learn a lot of basic skills, get experience working with clients, and pick up ideas for home study while preparing pleadings for filing. Subject: Re: [JUD.LawOfficeStudyProgram] Seeking LOS Sponsor Catie, I recommend keeping an eye on the VBA’s and the State of Vermont’s job openings websites, or any other sources for positions as a legal secretary/assistant, paralegal, or basic office assistant in a law firm. That is a great first step to more easily finding a sponsoring attorney. I’ve found that attorneys are also more willing to sign on if you can present them with a clear study plan that requires minimal effort and time on their part. Best of luck! Subject: [JUD.LawOfficeStudyProgram] Seeking LOS Sponsor EXTERNAL SENDER: Do not open attachments or click on links unless you recognize and trust the sender. Hello, My name is Catie Michael, and I am currently a senior at the University of Vermont. Upon graduating, I am hoping to participate in the Law Office Study Program. I am reaching out because I have been struggling to find someone willing to sponsor my apprenticeship. I was wondering if any of you have any advice for finding a placement, or perhaps know of any attorneys who might be able to sponsor me. I am willing to relocate for the job, so I am happy to work anywhere in the state. All the best, Catie This message and any attachments may contain information that is confidential, privileged and/or protected from disclosure under state and federal laws.
