[VDH.VermontPrevention] Naloxone in schools

I did some research on this and here is what I found out so far, please let us know if you have anything you can add to this conversation:

Rutland Schools, Springfield, Barre and Hartford schools all have Narcan policies. I do not have copies of them, but am sure it would be easy to get.

Also, check out this link for free Narcan at schools: If an individual school wants to get naloxone, the company from which the state buys it apparently will offer some free doses to schools. http://adaptpharma.com/adapt_press_release/march-19-2018-adapt-pharma-expands-program-offering-free-narcan/

Also, I got this from someone else: "You may already know this, but as an important reminder, school nurses as RNs are required by their licensed scope of practice to obtain a medical order before they can obtain and administer a prescription drug. Despite the pharmacies ability to dispense naloxone as OTC, RNs will need to have a copy of a doctor's order specific to use for that nurse in that job to administer it as school as part of contracted employee job duties. An RN as a citizen may feel comfortable using this as their back up: http://www.healthvermont.gov/response/alcohol-drugs/narcan-naloxone-overdose-rescue Training others to use it is possible but fall into a different discussion."

I also attached a memo regarding Narcan that may be of assistance. I hope this helps, I will let you know if I find out anything else!

Subject: Naloxone in schools

Is anyone aware of any schools in Vermont who have a policy regarding Naloxone? I know that some nurses carry it, or have it available as they would an epi pen, but any written policies anyone knows about? Thanks, Robin
